From the moment I found out about infused water I was instantly intrigued! Infusing is a very simple practice especially when you know the preliminary basics to a great infusion.
Always begin with the best water possible. Alkaline is ALWAYS my first choice, we will touch on the importance of alkalinity vs acidity within our bodies in a later post.
Artesian and Fresh Spring water are great choices as well. Stray away from tap and purified. Ensure your water is cold. We don’t want any food safety issues as the infusion process takes time… Temperature control is very important. Always fill room temperature or cold water (NOT HOT) with your fruits, vegetables, herbs, florals etc… You don’t want to compromise their solidity or the release of their nutrients.
Know that soaking times vary per item and/or group
Softer berries such as strawberries and melons begin to look messy and some lose color after just a few hours. Remove them when this happens. Unpeeled Citrus such as lemons create very bitter water if infused longer than 4 to 6 hours. Remove them as well then add fresh slices of these types of fruits for display purposes soon before serving.
Ice cold is best
Anything left warm longer than 2 hours will become a food safety hazard. Pay special attention to the temperature of your water.
Softer fruits like citrus and strawberries can be sliced thick, thin, halved, or quartered. Harder fruits like apples should be sliced very thin because they take longer to release flavors.
Use a muddler or wooden spoon to crush items such as herbs, ginger root and vanilla bean to release their oils and flavor. Tea infusers are best for loose herbs and florals.
Water infusion not only hydrates our bodies but can combat free radicals, clear acne, resolve constipation, encourage hair and nail growth and increase our vitamin and nutrient intake for the day all while increasing the alkaline level of our bloodstreams with the use of the proper water and food combinations… Just to name a few.
